Sagittarian beebees are the stars on the top of the tree until December 21st, so let me lay out a few more nifty gifty ideas for these lovely beings – which includes my bestest boss lady! Something super rad about the constellation Sag (besides the fact that it can be found in the middle of the Milky Way) is that three well known nebulae are shining brightly within it: Lagoon, Omega and Trifid. All of which we offer in a plethora of shapes, sizes and settings, hooray!

Sliding in a few days before Christmas is Capricornus, meaning “goat horn” in Latin. This sign is a blend of fish and goat, which I find very satisfying for some reason. One myth that explains this creature configuration goes as such: when the goat-god Pan was attacked by the monster Typhon, he dove into the Nile River to escape. The parts of him that were above the water remained a goat, but the parts under water transformed into a fish.
Fun Fact: Capricornus is generally used when referring to the constellation itself and Capricorn for the zodiac sign. Back in the day, as they say, Capricornus marked the Winter Solstice (which I’ll be writing about later this month).
The only Deep Sky Object associated with Capricornus is Messier 30, a globular cluster located approximately 27,000 light-years away from Earth. This cluster is currently approaching us at a speed of about 112 miles/180 kilometers per second. It was one of the first Deep Sky Objects discovered by Charles Messier in 1764.

Capricorns are ruled by the planet Saturn, which to the Romans, was the god of agriculture, liberation and time. His reign was depicted as a Golden Age of abundance and peace. Fun Fact: Scientists believe that it rains diamonds on Saturn. Atmospheric data for the gas giant indicates that carbon is abundant in its dazzling crystal form. Lightning storms turn methane into soot, which hardens into chunks of graphite and then diamond as it falls.
